Planting Songs, Tending Voices
I approach the voice -- yours and mine -- with curiosity, tenderness, deep listening, and presence. I also have a wealth of training to draw upon when useful. Singing changes our bodies -- it can be both a breath and awareness practice -- and also sheer exhilaration. There are so many songs that touch us in a multiplicity of ways, and I know hundreds of songs!
Songs can be a beautiful way of connecting unfamiliar peoples with each other... but the taking of songs without permission, understanding, or acknowledgement is a kind of exploitation. As a cis-white woman with European ancestry, I am still learning the ways in which my lack of awareness has harmed people. And if that sounds jargony, help me find a better way to name this truth! I seek music to share that connects and honors all of us, including the diverse identities we claim in race, sexuality, gender, faith, ability, and more. I aim for singing circles where you can belong, and I gladly welcome ideas that make our song spaces easier to be in.
